About

Hey, I’m Andrew (Or “AndHeDrew”). I’m a homeschool dad, game designer, and constant thinker.

What I believe:

Life is suffering

Yes. If nothing tragic has happened to you or someone you love in the past few years, you’re well overdue. Suffering is a constant. No utopia can be built by the hands of men to fix this. People are not piano keys. We’re all going to die, and we’re all going to suffer along the way.

There’s no use in denying this reality, and considerable harm in avoiding it.

It’s better to ask the question: Since life is suffering, what do I do about it?

Life is improvable

Our lives, even complex, unlucky, damaged lives, can be improved. We can play the hand we’re dealt with such beautiful skill that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say “Here lived a human who lived their life well.”

Meaning is found in adventure

Adventure is pushing the boundaries of what you know. It’s dipping one foot into the unknown, and taking sustainable risks. It’s the only way forward if you want to have a meaningful life.

We have to help others to live

If we don’t help other people, if we’re just in it for ourselves, then we’re lost. We decay in many ways. We die quickly and unhappily. If we want good life, if we want financial stability, if we want to be happy – we need to devote ourselves to the good of others.

God is a complicated subject

No, not that god. Not the god you grew up with, who hated sex, hated gay people, hated dancing, or hated you because you weren’t adequate.

That god was made up by your parents, your flawed church, your Sunday school teacher. I don’t believe in that god.

This is the prayer that I’m seeking to live out:

O Master, let me not seek as much
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.

I hope by living it out, I can demonstrate belief in the God of love.

About me

I’ve made a lot of things in my life, including creativity-inspiring tabletop games, coloring books, and I’m making a video game.

My wife, Sonia, and I have been through a lot together, including three children and two bouts with cancer.

We’ve figured some things out. I started writing some of the things down. People liked the things I wrote, so I decided to publish my thoughts on a consistent basis.

Here are a few things I’ve written:

Our Parent Who Art in Heaven: Does gender neutrality neuter the church?

Why you’re considering divorce, and why you’re wrong.

I am an atheist to these gods.

The Beauty and the Beast isn’t about what you think it’s about.

The path to a successful indie game: A complete history of my screw ups, false starts, and broken dreams.
